Why do cats love to chase birds?
One theory is that birds are delicious. This is true if the bird is prepared correctly, but a small bird with all of its feathers intact is hard to chew and delivers a paltry amount of meat. The reward is certainly not worth the effort that a cat will put into it.
Another theory talks of a time when cats and birds had an alliance against the mice. The birds would fly above, looking for mice below and they would signal to the cats who would chase the mice down and consume them. In return, the cats would point to any bugs they came across. It is said that this alliance ended in acrimony when a cat and an owl both went after the same mouse.
A more likely explanation is that cats enjoy a challenge. Cats are such efficient ground hunters that in order to find any kind of challenge they have to move into the third dimension: up. Birds are small, fast and can fly like the dickens. All of this combines to make them an excellent test of a cat's abilities.
Personally, I think that cats are simply jealous that birds can fly and they cannot. If you ask me, it's a small mercy that cats do not have wings, because I hate to think how humans would have gotten out of the stone age if they had had to deal with flying tigers.
This Birdie Num Num T-Shirt, one of the many thousands of cat-related designs available on CafePress
, shows a cat eating a bird and going "Num, Num." Maybe there's something to the "delicious" theory after all...
