The Black Cat Cafe opened on Mason Street at Eddy in 1906, shortly after the San Francisco earthquake and fire of that year destroyed the downtown area of San Francisco.

It was acquired by Charles Ridley in 1911 and was known for its vaudeville acts... as well as much more.

It was under police scrutiny for possible prostitution for many years. In 1921 the Black Cat lost its dance permit and closed.

In 1933 Charles Ridley reopened the Black Cat at a new location, 710 Montgomery Street, near the financial district. Sol Stoumen bought the Black Cat in the 1940s and it soon became a Bohemian hotspot.

Customers included William Saroyan and John Steinbeck. Jack Kerouac had many of his stories in On the Road set there as the Bohemian Bar. In the 1950's more and more gay people began to frequent the Black Cat. Allen Ginsberg declared it the best gay bar in America.

The military prohibited its members from going there. It became known as a drag queen bar and the fight was on to pull its liquor license.

Eventually this occured on October 30, 1963. On Halloween night it served only juice and soft drinks and closed forever the following day.
