You know how it starts off. Pleasantly enough.
You’re at a party and someone mentions those physicists in Europe and how they’re trying to create a black hole by making tiny little particles go really, really fast.
And then someone asks, what exactly is a black hole?
"Oh that’s simple," you confidently state. You explain it’s a spatial region where the density is such that nothing, not even light, can escape its gravitational pull.
And they ask how that works. "Doesn’t everything, you know, get sucked in?"
So you further detail how there’s an Event Horizon
and the criticality is that for something to be sucked in to a black hole it has to have gone past the event horizon of the black hole.
"Event horizon?"
At this point you realize you’re stuck. You’re about to start describing the spacetime boundary and how the mass of a black hole warps the continuum and you’re never going to get invited to any parties ever again at this point. You play safe.
"Look... honestly? A black hole is where God divided by zero." How can anyone possibly argue with that? They can’t. Go ahead and finish your beer.
