Theobromine is a bitter, mildly stimulating alkaloid found in chocolate.
Bitter and mildly stimulating? Sounds like your new girlfriend! Zing! But seriously, she's a lovely girl and we're all very happy for you both.
The most important thing you need to know about theobromine is that many animals metabolize it very slowly, so if you feed it to them in sufficient quantities they will get sick.
Dogs are susceptible to theobromine poisoning. Cats are even more sensitive, but they're not really interested in chocolate because it's not made of meat.
Although it's technically possible for humans to be suffer theobromine poisoning from ingesting chocolate, the quantities required (over 20 lbs in one sitting) are so enormous that they really only pose a threat to your Momma. Zing! But seriously, she's a classy lady and we all have the utmost respect for her.
Theobromine is closely related to our other favorite stimulant, caffeine. They differ in the intensity of effect, though.
Where caffeine hits your system like a jackhammer and "shakes things up", theobromine has a more relaxed approach.
