Germany 1945 Grossdeutsches Reich T-shirt
(CafePress)
A very interesting stamp here, one of two stamps issued by Germany on April 21, 1945. This stamp was only on sale at a few post offices in Berlin.
It is difficult to imagine the postal service was even functioning at that time. Hitler and his cronies were deep in their bunker, the Red Army was swarming throughout the city, young boys and elderly men were dragooned into fighting street by street, hardly the time to consider dropping a letter to Aunt Gertrude.
At work I knew a man who lived in Berlin in 1945, he was 15 at the time. He was stopped, given a rifle and told to go out and fight the Red Army. He admitted he actually ran home and hid under the bed.
Most of these stamps were never used, but rather 'liberated' by the Red Army after the fall of Berlin. These stamps are quite rare postally used.
Small wonder, as within two weeks, Hitler was dead and Berlin all but destroyed.
