Valentine's Day is coming and you had better be ready for it.

Finding a suitable Valentine's gift for your significant loved one can be a tricky proposition, especially if one or both of you are ironic hipsters.

You need to be able to find something which simultaneously says "I care about you in a totally non-ironic way." and "I don't care about Valentine's Day at all, I'm just being ironic. Let us laugh together at the fools who take such things seriously. Ha ha!"

Flowers are insufficiently ironic. Dead flowers are post-ironic and bordering on the emo. Chocolates might be acceptable, as long as they are either hand-made, fair-trade, small-batch and organic, or a nostalgic item that hasn't been manufactured since 1975 containing day-glo fillings that taste like burning.

Jewelry is a minefield that is best avoided altogether.

Underwear is overly ironic and should not be attempted by anyone less than a level 10 master of irony.

The safest route is either a six pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon, or a T-Shirt. The advantage of the T-Shirt is that it will probably stick around longer than the beer.

This I Choo-Choose You T-Shirt from those masters of irony at BustedTees, is inspired by The Simpsons, but it's OK; it's early Simpsons and anyway you can always claim that you're just being ironic.

That will work until 2011, at which point it will become post-ironic. In 2015 it will become nostalgic. In 2017 it will be back to being ironic. Enjoy, but not too much!
