How is it a game can make you feel defeated? Aren’t games supposed to be fun? And Blokus even looks like it should be fun.
Bright colored blocks, in playful shapes. The friendly board. The enticing box, promising it’s simple enough for even a five-year-old.
Maybe that’s the problem. The kids are good at this. Their friends are good at this. Apparently they even have fun with this. "Abstract strategy board game" – am I being too logical? Have years of education sapped my ability to think outside the box?
Sigh... it’s distressing. Trying to get those corners... no, wait, there’s an edge! Passing again... my score is going to be bleak and unsettling.
But it’s just a game, right? Enjoy the adventure; it’s not important who wins.
Maybe I can feed the pieces to the dog. Can’t play with chewed-up blocks, can you? No, that’s a cheap way around it. What the hell... let’s be honest. I’m crap at this game.
