Hulk first appeared in 1962
when Incredible Hulk #1
was published.
And as you may have heard, in issue #1, readers were introduced to a GRAY Hulk! The
decision was made to make Hulk a non-racial color, but problems with
the gray tones (some panels made the Hulk look green, even in issue 1)
meant the team of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and colorist Stan Goldberg
changed the
coloring to green from Hulk #2
onwards.
Now a hugely popular
character, Hulk was not a hit in the early Sixties. By Hulk #6
,
sales were not strong
enough and the series was cancelled. Luckily for us, the Hulk was not
yet done. Far from it! He was just about to find his niche, initially
by crossing over into other comic books, both as hero and villain.
Other Hulk Cartoon Appearances
Despite the cancellation of
his series, Hulk didn't have to wait long to reappear in the Marvel
universe. He popped up in Fantastic Four #12,
his first of
several encounters with The Thing
,
which is for many fans
a kind of
perfect storm of hugely-muscled hero freaks.
He also co-starred in The Avengers #1 and The Avengers #2
alongside Thor, Iron
Man, The Wasp and Ant-Man, and came back as a villain in The
Avengers #3
and The Avengers #5
.
He appeared again
in
Fantastic Four
#25
and Fantastic Four #26
,
and The
Amazing Spider-Man #14
.
He went on to become a
regular co-feature in Tales to Astonish,
which later was renamed The Incredible Hulk, running uninterrupted to
date, via
various relaunches, a reset to #1 and so on.
