I'm sure that we have all had the experience of being in a conversation with somebody who wants to talk about something other than ourselves and how awesome we are.

The topics can vary widely: the weather, the economy, politics, themselves. The one thing that they all have in common is that they have nothing to do with you!

To overcome this failing in others, you must become a master of conversational Jiu-Jitsu. With enough practice, you can learn to turn any topic around and make it all about you.

Let's start with an easy one. Suppose that Talky McYammerson is going on about how terrible her commute is. Maybe you also have a commute! You can just interrupt and start talking about your commute instead.

There's no need to wait for a pause in the conversation; just start talking over the other person. If they don't stop talking immediately, then gradually raise your voice until their words are simply drowned out.

If you do not have any direct experience of the subject at hand, then you will have to master two further skills: the wild invention and the awkward segue.

For example: suppose that Chatty O'Bigmouth is talking about a military coup in a far off country about which you know nothing and care even less. First come up with a wild invention, such as: "I once led a military coup in Latin America." Use the interruption skills that we covered before to cut the other person off.

Once the conversational ball is in your court, swiftly change the subject to something that you are more familiar with. For example: "Speaking of Latin, I was top of my class in Latin for three years running..."
