So one day I’m walking through town. Nice day, nice town. Quaint, even.

And this guy comes up to me. Says, "Hey."

I smile. "Hey!" and I give him a cheery wave. He looks puzzled. I check my hand and it’s nice and clean, has the conventional number of fingers, so I’m not quite sure about the puzzlement.

Oh wait. Replay his greeting in my head. "Hey." Umm... now that I reflect, perhaps it was a bit interrogatory and slightly questioning in tone, rather than a merely arbitrary and informal method of greeting.

"Hey," he says again. "Yep, with you so far," I reply, just as cheerily as before. Well, I like to be friendly.

He leans forwards, almost conspiratorially. I lean forwards too. "What are you doing?" he inquires? "Leaning forwards," I respond, confidently. "Why?" Actually I’m not entirely sure, so I let that pass.

"You’re one of them, right?"
"One of which?"
"Those people."
"Which people?"
"A holy roller," he says.
I smile modestly. "No, afraid not... I haven’t gone roller skating since 1983. So passé. Still, I used to be quite good..."
"No! I mean a Bible Thumper... you’re one of them, right?"
"Well I try to avoid that, my Bible is a hardback cover and if I catch my hand on the corner it really stings."
"NO! You’re a Christian... aren’t you?"

Maybe I should stop mucking around. Sometimes these things are important.

"I am."
He looks relieved. "I... um... I need to talk to someone. I, you know, kind of have some questions. About life, and, well, what happens. I just heard... someone I went to school with... cancer... I mean, I’m only 42... and, well... you know?"

I do know. I was right, it is important. "Come on, let’s get a cup of coffee. I’m buying. Want to talk?"
