A guy walks into a bar. He’s got a laptop with numbers scrolling up the screen and a parrot.
Orders a beer. As you do, in a bar. And a glass of water. For the parrot. (Just to satisfy any animal rights activists that might be reading this tale.)
The parrot is sitting there, dressed fairly oddly, by all accounts. He’s got a little black hat and an eye patch. Every few seconds the parrot comes out with an announcement. "Pi to 1000 decimal places."... "Pi to 1010 decimal places."... "Pi to 1020 decimal places."
Not unnaturally, someone gets a bit inquisitive about this and asks what’s going on.
The guy explains that he’s testing a new piece of software and it’s calculating pi for him.
And the parrot?
He’s keeping track of how far it’s gotten in the calculations. He’s announcing the rate at which it's calculating pi. "In fact," the guy continues, "you could call him my pi-rate parrot."
"And the black hat and the eye patch?"
The guy points to his shirt and says "Couldn’t find a shirt small enough to fit him."
