I like choices. Not too fond of Reese’s peanut butter cups, to be honest; I prefer, oh, hard candies. They last longer, for one thing. That whole sweet peanut butter thing; it’s just not working for me.

Scotch whisky. Mmm. I’m partial to Laphroaig, but I’m easy; anything that’s a single malt and is older than my car is a good start.

Know what, though? Just about anything I could write here is pretty trivial. It’s all stuff that makes life a beautiful, complicated, and intriguing patchwork, but it’s just stuff. Having a choice... that’s what counts.

Some people don’t have much of a chance to say what they want.

Some people never get the chance to even know they have a choice. About anything. At all.

And people think that’s okay. It’s a right to choose. Thank God they get a choice, a chance to say what they want. About anything, no matter how trivial.

Or how important. Like a life. Of a baby. Someone small, vulnerable, dependent on the people who started their life. And now is choosing to end it.

Shame the baby doesn’t get to make a choice. Ever. The most final, compelling, irreversible choice of all and they didn’t even know it was being made on their behalf.

I wonder if people ever choose to think about that.
