Computers are actually fairly simple machines, at their core. That core, of course, being the processor inside, the heart, the brains of the computer.

The processor is really fast, but it only does very simple things, usually, like addition or subtraction. Which still makes it smarter than your average college athlete on an athletic scholarship, but I digress. And apart from that, I’m getting off the subject.

But there are some bigger computers out there, minicomputers and mainframes, and some of them have pretty complex processors.

There is one, in fact, the VAX, which has a processor so complicated it can even solve quadratic equations. You still can’t play World of WarCraft on it, however, which is why non-geeks have never heard of it and won’t care if (as is extraordinarily likely) they never do.

Seriously, if you can’t detonate 30 battalions of goblins on your computer, what the hell good is it? Probably has really bad resolution, like 800x600 or something. Bet the frame rate sucks, too. Lame.

In fact, about the only interest a VAX holds for your average teenager is back to that quadratic equation solving, because as pointless as quadratic equations are you still know your math exam is always going to have a question which expects you to know how to do them.

Okay, VAX it is then, just smuggle it in to the exam room. Except that the damn thing is the size of a small room. Okay, I can’t use it to cheat and I can’t play games on it. That’s it; a VAX is officially a piece of junk.
