On the face of it, 1.618 is not that special a number. Actually, it’s less than special, looking at it in a hard light-of-day kind of way. Just look at it... totally asymmetrical.
Who would consider it exceptional or – dare I say – beautiful in any way? It’s irrational. (A little math humor there, by the way.) You know what, let’s call it phi, we might stand a fighting chance then.
Oh, right, phi. THAT number. Aesthetically, this is a gorgeous concept. The Golden Ratio. The source of beauty in architecture since the days of the Parthenon.
Which is really quite something, because no-one even knew what the actual number itself WAS until 1597, they just knew it made pretty rectangles. Talk about abstraction...
