The 65c stamp depicting the German airship Graf Zeppelin was issued on April 19, 1930 for use on mail carried on the first flight of the Graf Zeppelin from the United States to Latin America and Europe in May, 1930.

This stamp depicts the Graf Zeppelin over the Atlantic Ocean. It was part of a set of three values, 65c, $1.30 and $2.60.

The stamps were withdrawn from sale on June 30, 1930. Few were sold due to the high face value and this at the start of the Great Depression. A set today will cost about $1000.00. Alternatively, you can get this great 65c Graf Zeppelin hat for just $14.95. Click on the links or image to see more items, including T-shirts, mousemats or a fridge magnet.

The Graf Zeppelin had a perfect safety record and in the 1930s, was the only method of sending airmail between North America and Europe.

The later, larger Zeppelin, Hindenburg, exploded upon landing at Lakehurst, New Jersey on May 6, 1937, which effectively ended the trans-Atlantic Zeppelin flights.

The Graf Zeppelin continued making flights within Europe, but was dismantled in 1940 at the beginning of World War II.
