The Mothers of America stamp was issued in 1934 for Mother's Day and depicted Whistler's painting of his mother.

A few collectors at the time realized that this stamp was the same color as a 1930 Spanish stamp that honored the famous Spanish painter Francisco de Goya and depicted his famous 'La Maja Desnuda'.

These collectors bought some of these Spanish stamps and carefully cut out the image of the nude and pasted it over Whistler's mother. The Mothers of America nude stamp which was the result is a great example of early cut and paste stamp technology.

So much for the idea of stamp collectors being conserative, stuffy old men!

The design is available from Stamp Gift Shop on a variety of different products. Click on the T-shirt or links to see all the different gift options.
